CHIEN Li-Yun works with installation, video, and writing to explore the relations between memory, time, and structure.
Through the assemblage of objects, the displacement of space, and the incompleteness of language, her works examine contradictions and erasures within perception. Beginning from personal experience, her practice extends toward the carriers of memory in contemporary society, as well as a reflection on the position of viewing.
Her recent solo exhibition Diverging Scenarios: On Forgetting and Inscription takes the experience of a family member diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease as a point of departure, to reflect on the blurred boundaries between writing, storing, and forgetting, and to probe the possibilities of divergence. Beginning with the act of writing, her works unfold multiple interpretations of bifurcation, detours, and contradictory experiences—across the errancy of hands, the fractures in voices, and the reassembling of installations.
Her works have been exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) and in the “Sculpture 575” joint exhibition at Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. In traversing across languages and geographies, she uses subtle bodily displacements to question the fissures of memory and time. Her practice emerges as both an attempt at negotiating perception and structure, and as a path not yet named.
